Koru Spring Show 2010      17 March – 8 May 2010

Koru Spring Show 2010 will comprise the work of ten artists working in a range of different media including wall and plinth mounted glass, bronze, copper and oil painting. This will be the first time some of the artist's have exhibited at Koru Contemporary Art and for British artist David Reekie his first exhibition in Asia.

David Reekie is an eminent glass sculptor and his work is included in the collection of several public institutions in England, Europe and the United States including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh and the Tutsek Foundation, Munich. He uses dark humour in his work to express his observations about the human condition and delights in subverting the deceptively seductive aspects of the medium to this end.

The Spring Show will include large scale oil paintings with gallery new comer Pete Wheeler exhibiting his work for the first time following a successful exhibition in New Zealand at the end of 2009. Wheeler's paintings pull no punches and range from anti-war sloganeering to graphic images of animals in mortal combat inspired by the pages of National Geographic. In this new body of work Wheeler takes a look at
"....the role of the authentic individual and how it is lost, it deals with the notion of the anti-hero, as presented to us through boyish notions, the outlaw, the cowboy etc..."
                                                                                        - Pete Wheeler, email correspondence, 2010.

Work from the same series has been selected to be included in a group exhibition at Tape Modern, Berlin curated by Anna Erickson, a private art dealer living and working in Berlin and New York, currently curating Damien Hirst exhibition at Haunch of Venison, Berlin and former sales director for Gagosian Gallery, New York and former Director of Yvon Lambert, New York.

Wheeler's paintings contrast strongly with the other painters work in the exhibition the abstract paintings of Margit Fureder explore the properties of oil paint in her heavily worked panels which are expressive, moody works with a slight hint of a landscape and a feeling of warmth conveyed through her use of paint.

Julia Brooker who is based in the United Kingdom paints on aluminium playing with depth and delighting in colour. The very nature of the surface of aluminium is perfectly flat and she enhances this by using acrylic paint and working within a minimal abstraction style.

Chinese artist Sun Yi creates books in cast glass screen printing images of family photographs onto the work. These diminutive objects have a strong nostalgic element with the images printed in sepia tones and the edges of the books conveying the illusion of hand made paper. Alongside her cast glass works will be nine beautifully rendered dream-like drawings with a fetishistic bent–think furs, bondage and animals. The detail in the ink on paper works is enviable.

The Spring Show will also include the work of well known gallery artists each working in glass but with widely varied aesthetics. Both David Murray and Galia Amsel create monolithic tabletop glass pieces but Claudia Borella also has wall mounted panels which interpret the New Zealand landscape by moonlight.

With a beautiful verdigris finish to the surface sculptor Rudy van der Pol creates free standing sculptural works which have a delicacy amplified by the patina of the copper the work is made from. The new work is in a circular shape creating a sympathetic balance with the intricacy of the sculpture overall.

Whereas Rick Swain’s bronze work has a more subdued patina the form of his work is more organic and reflects many shapes found in nature such as a fern frond, waves or a cocoon.

With such a range of work to view the gallery will be well worth a visit over the coming months.
