CHRISTINE CATHIE
--------------------------------------------------------
Born 1955, New Zealand
-------------------------------------------------------
Christine Cathie was born in Wellington, New Zealand. She has exhibited her cast glass sculptures widely in solo and group exhibitions throughout Australia, New Zealand, France, Denmark United States and Hong Kong. In 2007 Cathie was awarded a Creative Excellence Award in the Molly Morpeth Canaday 3D Awards, Whakatane Museum and 2nd Prize in the Luminous Art of Glass Awards, Mazda Artworks, both in New Zealand. In 2006 she was commissioned to design and produce the Arts Foundation of New Zealand’s New Generation Awards. Cathie was a selected finalist in the Ranamok Glass Prize, Sydney in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006. In 2004 she received a Members Award from the NZSAG Conference in Wanganui, New Zealand. Christine Cathie’s glass works are represented in public and private collections nationally and internationally including, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, New Zealand and the Glasmuseet Ebeltoft, Denmark.
The smooth curves and rich colour of Christine Cathie’s glass sculptures illustrate the fluidity of the form and a sense of movement captured. The works are large and solid and though the work itself is heavy, it appears weightless and delicate. Cathie’s glass works are inspired by natural forms such as New Zealand’s undulating terrain and coastal escarpments, created from cast glass. The interplay of light and shadow makes these forms a delight to view.
