Christine Boswijk is a ceramic artist based in Nelson, New Zealand. Her work focuses strongly on the emotive and sculptural possibilities of clay, creating works that prompt a reaction and affinity from the viewer rather than presenting them with a narrative series. Boswijk completed her training in ceramics in 1977 at Otago Polytechnic's School of Fine Art. In 1988 she was awarded a QEII Arts Council grant for post-graduate study which she undertook at the East Sydney Technical College. This was an important period in Boswijk's creative development, which saw her move away from the hand built vessels for which she was known. Instead she began looking towards New Zealand, the strong horizontal and vertical landscape elements of her environment here, elements which crept into her works and continue to be an important part of them today. Boswijk's work is inherently about clay - how is it sourced, handled, fired and used in everyday life. Her hand built works have a feeling of being ancient, perhaps drawn from the artist's awareness of both the primary nature of the medium and the role it has played throughout human history. Boswijk approaches clay intuitively rather than traditionally; building, wrapping, layering and bandaging to create a multi-faceted form which resonates with hidden ideas and relationships. This is a significant diversion from much of New Zealand studio ceramics and has created an aesthetic language which remains synonymous with Boswijk's practice. In 2004, Boswijk was made an Officer of The New Zealand Order of merit for services to Ceramic Art.
