Jean-Paul Pancrazi & Sunny Wang Rhythm & Tone       May 5 - June 9, 2012

EXHIBITION DATES EXTENDED NOW CLOSING JUNE 30, 2012 with Final Days Celebration Saturday, 16 June, 2012

The exhibition will feature the works of two artists: French painter Jean-Paul Pancrazi and Taiwanese glass artist Sunny Wang. Both artists are interested in the act of writing and translate it into material form, using different media.

Aiming to explore the relationship between literature, calligraphy and visual arts in the digital era of the 21st century, we hope the dialogue between Jean-Paul Pancrazi's and Sunny Wang's artworks will stimulate a reflection from viewers on the physical experience of writing and the spontaneity of the act of tracing.

Sunny Wang's stones are evocations of calligraphic lines. Contemplating the stones is like observing the flowing rhythmic moves of a paintbrush dancing on a white piece of paper. But in Pancrazi's paintings, the writing gesture is captured and fixed in the materials. What we see are traces of an arrested moment.

Sunny Wang's glass stones are displayed on the floor, surrounded by Jean-Paul Pancrazi's paintings on the walls. The viewer walks all around the installation and physically senses the complementarity of the artworks: the horizontal aspect of Wang's installation and verticality of Pancrazi's works; rhythm of the stones and stillness of the paintings. The fragile and vulnerable glass pieces, spread out on the floor, look up to the robust and thick clay-covered canvases stand sentinel around them, as protective guardians.

In this fascinating exhibition, we navigate between theory and art-practice, and between West and East.
